Shakuntala Nagarkar

A Lotus in the Mud

Standing tall in a muddy field, draped in an exquisite saree, Shakuntala Nagarkar resembles a lotus. A flower that manages to bloom in even the murkiest of waters. A flower that signifies to great extents, her life and her character.

Standing tall in a muddy field, draped in an exquisite saree, Shakuntala Nagarkar resembles a lotus. A flower that manages to bloom in even the murkiest of waters. A flower that signifies to great extents, her life and her character.

A virtuoso in Lavani, Maharashtra’s most well-known folk art, Shakuntala gets her love for dance from her mother. And while Lavani has been steadily losing its patronage, she has dedicated the last fifty years of her life to keeping the art form alive. But the odds have never been in her favour. There have been times where Shakuntala has had to perform with hunger gnawing at her stomach. The only thing that kept her going in these circumstances, was her desire to taste fame and success. And she did!

As you see her now, Shakuntala is a performer at many high-profile events. And her mastery hasn’t gone unappreciated! She has received an award by the hands of our ex-President Pratibha Patil! Shakuntala has never wanted her children to dance to the fickle tunes of fortune, like she has had to. So, she has ensured they received a quality education, which has eventually led them to better lives. As for her? She remains a lotus that refuses to wither!
