We Can Care

When she was diagnosed with breast cancer, 3rd stage, she was depressed and shattered. She fought her way up and realised that she could pass on her experience to the world. And today, she is just doing that.

In May 2002, I was diagnosed with breast cancer, 3rd stage. I underwent the treatment of radiotherapy, chemotherapy and mastectomy at Adyar Cancer Institute, Chennai. I was a depressed and shattered person at the age of 32 years. That’s when my doctor - radiation oncologist Dr. Summana Premkumar – advised me to start doing yoga. I met Sri Shivrishi of SYC, learnt yoga and started doing my yoga practices regularly with utmost sincerity. Yoga Nidra helped me immensely to come out of my insomnia, depression and my state of mental breakdown. I continued the practices of asanas, pranayama and Yoga Nidra and I could feel the fear of death and anxiety coming down.

That’s when in December 2002 under the able guidance of Dr. Sumanna we started a group called ‘SAKHI’ and started helping counselling cancer patients. Sri Shivrishi has given many yoga sessions at Cancer Institute. For immobile patients, we have given Yoga Nidra on bed.
The quality of life of 5 more ladies transformed because of yoga and now, a support group called ‘We Can Care,’ has been established by SYECT having Dr. Sumanna as the chief patron. Our aim is to reach as many cancer patients as possible, give them confidence and counselling through yoga, and make them realize that after cancer, life is not doomed but it is only the start of a new journey.

I joined yoga to come out of my cancer as a student and now I have become a teacher always looking out for any opportunity to serve humanity. At present, I’m running a yoga centre in Madipakkam.
